Using Calisthenics to Reduce Subcutaneous Fat

Using Calisthenics to Reduce Subcutaneous Fat

I read an article a long time ago that summed up how losing fat feels in one word: Uncomfortable.

Note the use of “losing fat” rather than losing weight – this is very deliberate, as I cannot stress enough your weight has little reflection on your health or physical appearance. If you don’t do regular exercise then yes, using your weight or BMI can give you a (very) rough indication of where you are on the fitness scale, yet I have known people who have a higher body fat percentage (BF%) than me who have better cardiovascular health. We could get into all[…]Meet the Barstuds - Part 4

Meet the Barstuds – Part 4

Where do you start with someone like Johno? He is the most passionate and consistent in his training of the four of us. He regularly sacrifices sleep and delays meals to fit in another couple hundred reps. We call him the Crazy Barstud, and not without cause. He is the other co-founder (along with Tim). He has attained a Cert III in Fitness and definitely knows how to put someone through their paces.

Johno and I met in 2006. To my memory he has always been fairly fit, though I can definitely that he is currently the strongest he has been[…]Lucky Dip 30-Day Challenge

Lucky Dip 30-Day Challenge

This workout is something I’ve been working on for a few months now. It started out as boredom – I was so bored of monthly challenges having the same exercises with increasing amounts of reps. So I wondered, how could I change up my workout everyday? How can I keep it interesting while not needing to sit down and plan out each individual day?

This is my answer to those questions – leave it to chance. The idea is that there is a wide enough spread of exercises that by the end of the month you’ll have sufficiently worked every[…]Meet the Barstuds! - Part 2

Meet the Barstuds! – Part 2

The second installment of Meet the Barstuds introduces us to the most outgoing one of us. One of the founding fathers of the Barstuds, he’s many things rolled into one. He isn’t just a Barstud – he’s a father, a partner, a family man and a great friend. You can spot him his natural habitat by keeping an eye out for his majestic crest of hair.

Not one to namby around with words, his profile reflects his outlook on life. Introducing… Tim!

Meet the Barstuds – Part 3

I’ll be honest, it feels a little funny to write about myself. It’s a learning experience to say the least. One of the many things I’ve learned while putting this together is that there isn’t a whole lot of footage or images of me – I think it’s mostly because I’m usually the person behind the camera. That, and quite possibly that I’m very picky about which images of me get released to the albums.
As you may have guessed, this week’s Meet the Barstuds is focused on me – Media Coordinator for the Barstuds, Anji. Possibly the youngest and[…]Meet the Barstuds! - Part 1

Meet the Barstuds! – Part 1

We here at Brisbane Barstuds have decided to take things a little more personally. And what could be more personal than getting our faces out in the open!
Some people have mentioned that they find coming to a session too intimidating. We want you to know that we are just regular people (with the exception of one of us), and maybe getting to know us a little more before you turn up might make it a little more welcoming.
So without further ado, here is the first installment in our multi-part series on the faces you will most regularly see at[…]No thumbnail available

“How do I do that?!”

One of the most common questions we hear when people come train with us is;
“How do I start?”
There isn’t a certain special, magical way to start doing these things. The simplest answer (which is also the right answer) is that you just have to start doing it. But in this post I’ll try and break that down into some more manageable steps.

1. What do you want to do?
This is probably the thing we ask people the most. Setting goals is extremely important – creating clear goals will help you train more efficiently, so you can get the most out of[…]No thumbnail available

Launch of the Barstuds Blog

The Brisbane Barstuds are a calisthenics-based fitness group located in Brisbane, Australia (which you probably already know, otherwise why else would you be here?).

Through this blog we aim to provide insight to newcomers though our knowledge and experiences. Our aim is to post around once or twice a month on various topics, including motivation methods, mental training and non-bar related fitness topics (e.g. diet, injuries, self-massage tips).

We will also strive to have an in-depth look into specific exercises, in particular the differences in technique between individuals. As each person thinks and is built differently, we aim to explore individual approaches[…]
